The European Commission, DG XII, is supporting an advanced study course on "Sciences and technologies of the materials and of the environment for the protection of stained glass and stone monuments", to be held in Paris, France, from 7 to 18 September 1998. The course will be supported under the EU's Environment and Climate research programme.

The aim of this course is to disseminate the latest knowledge concerning science and technology for monument protection among young European scientists and graduates, and to provide them with the opportunity to establish contact with Europe's leading scientists in the field.

It will also aim to stimulate a scientific and technological approach to European cultural heritage, involving the development of background knowledge on materials from a physico-chemical point of view, formulation of a basic knowledge of the atmospheric environment, and integrating material and environmental sciences.

The main topics to be covered during the course are monument materials science, and monument environmental science. The course will also feature case studies, laboratory tests of monuments in a polluted atmosphere, and field trips to examine weathering of monuments and glass.
