Sustaining world development into the next millennium

The 17th Congress of the World Energy Council will be held in Houston, USA, from 13 to 18 September 1998. The Council will address the theme "Energy and technology: sustaining world development into the next millennium" and will include addresses from government and industrial leaders from all over the world, including US President, Mr. Bill Clinton, President Suleyman Demirel of Turkey, President Carlos Menem of Argentina and the South African Deputy President Thabo Mbeki.

The conference will be divided into four main sectors which will cover a range of topics under the following headings:

- Today's energy resources: challenges and choices;
- Advancing energy technology to meet growing global needs;
- Change and innovation: the evolving energy industry;
- The global energy sector: concepts for a sustainable future.

Presentations during the paper sessions will cover the following:

- Efficient development and application of conventional resources;
- Advanced systems to enhance development and application of conventional resources;
- Role of developing sources, systems and services;
- Concepts for a sustainable future.

In addition, the conference will feature a number of round table sessions, working groups, an exhibition of technologies and services in the global energy market and a series of technical visits to American energy facilities.
