The Austrian Network for Environmental Research will organise a workshop on European research and monitoring strategies for sustainable development in Bled, Slovenia, from 11 to 13 October 1998. A representative from the European Commission, DG XII, will open the workshop and present current and proposed Commission strategies for research in this area, including within the upcoming Fifth RTD Framework Programme.

The aim of the workshop is to discuss European strategies for monitoring sensitive habitats and to give scientific advice to policy-makers concerning future regional development planning in such habitats as the limestone Alps. The venue for the workshop, Slovenia, will also facilitate the possibility for discussing the position of Central and Eastern European countries in respect of the harmonisation of European conservation strategies.

The workshop will feature three working groups on the following topics:

- Impact of Alpine limestone habitats by different use interests;
- Impact on Alpine limestone habitats by pollution;
- Socio-economics and tourism.

Other topics to be addressed during the plenary sessions of the conference will include:

- Overview on the ecology and function of limestone habitats;
- The economic assessment of natural values;
- Mass balance oriented integrated monitoring in Alpine ecosystems;
- Concept and first results of a remote sensing-based monitoring system for the Bavarian Alps.
