Launching of the Evoltree Network of Excellence

Launching of the Evoltree Network of Excellence
Press meeting, Thursday 27 April 2006, 12am-1pm
Centre Condorcet, Pessac (33), France

27 April 2006 - 27 April 2006
France
An analysis of the evolutionary history of forest trees can provide information on how forests respond to climate change. Forests are complex ecosystems that need an holistic research approach to improve our understanding on how they function. These issues will be addressed by an interdisciplinary network of scientists and other stakeholders—EVOLTREE. This new, major European initiative will be launched on the 27th of April at the Centre Condorcet, Pessac (33), near Bordeaux, France. Since the 1980s, European researchers have analyzed genetic structures of European oaks and other forest tree species. These efforts enabled a better understanding of the migration of trees through the continent after the last glaciation. EVOLTREE represents a new chapter in these efforts.

EVOLTREE involves 25 research groups from 15 European countries that are working together to identify and study genes of adaptive significance in order to evaluate the contribution they make to the evolution of tree species and tree communities. EVOLTREE will integrate and enhance the European research infrastructures and information resources. Research will be also carried out on organisms that interact with trees, such as insects and mycorrhizal fungi.
