The European Transport conference, the first event organised by the new Association for European Transport (AET), will be held in Loughborough, United Kingdom, from 14 to 18 September 1998. The aim of the event is to provide a forum for discussion on the latest pan-European transport issues involving academics, practitioners, as well as representatives from all levels of government.

The two main themes will be "Integrated transport policy" and "EU research and dissemination". The conference will also consider the financing and development of infrastructure across Europe, drawing on experiences of Western Europe and the implications for accession countries to the EU.

The conference will be opened with a plenary session on the UK Government White Paper on Integrated Transport and this theme will continue through the week culminating in a workshop on the implications of the move to integrated transport throughout Europe. Sessions on the dissemination of project results funded under the Fourth RTD Framework Programme will lead to a plenary session on the upcoming Fifth RTD Framework Programme.

Specific topics will include:

- Evaluating air quality impacts of transit system improvements;
- Factors affecting the availability of stated preference;
- Accessible transport: a Local Agenda 21 issue;
- New logistic concepts for advanced urban freight transport;
- Development and evaluation of coordinated re-routing and signalling;
- The trans-European network in the 21st century.
