The eighth international meeting on the Global Information Society will take place on 16 and 17 November 1998 in Paris, France, and will be supported by the European Commission, DG X and DG XIII, as well as the French Commission for Cultural Affairs and the French Ministry for Industry. The conference will be opened by the European Commissioner for research and innovation, Mrs. Edith Cresson.

The programme of the forum will provide participants with the opportunity to meet representatives from various international organisations and a series of discussions, demonstrations and presentations will focus on the development of common interests in the global Information Society.

The sessions of the conference will cover the following:

- The impact of the Internet economy and converging technologies in the Information Society and the global response;
- Communication competition;
- Best practices and experiences in building and financing networked/smart communities.
