The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will organise a regional seminar on approaches and practices on strengthening radiation protection and waste management infrastructure in Eastern Europe and the former USSR, to be held in Bratislava, Slovakia, from 28 September to 2 October 1998.

The seminar will provide a forum for exchanging information on the national programmes for establishing or upgrading infrastructures for radiation and waste safety. Special emphasis will be placed on ensuring consistency with the Basic Safety Standards legislative and regulatory framework and in the practical application of radiation safety requirements.

Particular attention will be paid to the following topics:

- Radiation protection;
- Safe management of radioactive waste;
- Safety of radiation sources;
- Security of radioactive materials.
