The fifth world conference on human choice and computers will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 25 to 28 August 1998, sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP).

The conference will provide a platform for discussion of the latest developments in information and communications technologies (ICT). Particular attention will be paid to the impact of the Information Society on work, human rights, information flow, as well as the threats posed to its development.

Topics to be addressed in detail during the conference will fall under the following themes:

- Virtuality in society and virtual worlds;
- Social challenges of ICT;
- Switzerland at the age of networks and globalisation: impacts and opportunities;
- Emerging forms of work and organisation;
- Social actors in ICT;
- Emerging civic networks;
- Human and medical imaging;
- Images of values;
- Applications of ICT;
- The power of art, human choice and human action;
- Governance of the Internet from an ethical point of view.
