The ninth European symposium on comminution will be held in Albi, France, from the 8 to 10 September 1998. The symposium will be organised by the European Federation of Chemical Engineering and will be supported within the framework of the EU's Industrial and Materials Technologies research programme (BRITE-EURAM).

The purpose of the symposium is to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of recent developments in science and technology relating to comminution and classification of all kinds of material. Papers will be presented during the conference on equipment and process developments, as well as on applied and basic research in the field. Some of the specific areas to be covered will include:

- Fundamentals and microprocesses including fracture physics, particle breakage and material characteristics;
- Mechanical activation and mechano-chemical reactions;
- Classification in wet and dry systems of fine and coarse particles;
- Modelling and simulation;
- Machine design and practical experience;
- Control and instrumentation;
- Operation of comminution circuits and systems;
- Wear in crushers and mills.
