29 June 2006 - 1 July 2006
Austria
The Barcelona Biomedical Research Park PRBB and the Continuing Education Institute IDEC of the Pompeu Fabra University launch a novel biotech business certificate course with leading international biotech experts under the name "Science and Innovation Management Studies" (SIMS). The SIMS programme is directed to managers in biotech industry and consists of four modules that are aimed at the life cycle of a biotech company. The first module of three days is entitled "Basic Business Essentials of Biotechnology" and takes place in Barcelona from June 29 to July 1, 2006. Registration is open and the fee for module 1 is 1.500 Euros. The next three modules cover "IP, licensing and the pipeline for value creation", "Biotech financing, partnering, M&As and strategic alliances" and "Clinical trial strategy and regulatory approval".

The best practise faculty from across Europe and the USA for this first certificate course on the business essentials includes hands-on experts like Robert Carperter, Director Genzyme; Bernard Gilly, Partner at Sofinnova; Roy Lobb, Partner at Abingworth Ventures; Fouzia Laghrissi-Thode, Director Global Licensing and Partnering at F. Hoffmann-La Roche; Julian Adams, CSO at Infinity Pharmaceuticals and Luke Evnin, Partner at MPM Capital.

SIMS is legally placed under, and managed by PRBB and is organized in partnership with IDEC of the Pompeu Fabra University. A strategic advisory board will secure that SIMS has the right impact in the international market and will help to organise courses and faculty. The contents for the first module have been defined with the help of the European Federation of Biotechnology and several venture capital and biotech companies, as well as the Economics department of the Pompeu Fabra University through Ramon Marimon, Founding Director of SIMS. The Programme Director is José Carlos Gutiérrez, Vice-President for Research and Development at Boston based Peptimmune, and former Vice-President for Inflammation at Millenium Pharmaceuticals.

The objective of SIMS is to create a world-class framework in Barcelona to facilitate a co-operative industry approach to professional education and development. This targeted executive program will serve to improve and update overall skills and knowledge levels, and to encourage entrepreneurship and innovation. SIMS is specialized in case based studies that are directly applicable in the European biotech sector.

SIMS courses are sponsored by the Bioregion of Catalonia and the BBVA Foundation.
