An international forum on intelligent analytical solutions will be held in Jülich, Germany, from 24 to 26 September 1998, supported by the EU within the framework of the Industrial Materials Technologies research programme (BRITE-EURAM).

The aim of the conference is to bring together scientists from various fields of basic and applied research using analytical approaches to discuss problem solving strategies. Applications from various domains such as medicine, the environment, forensic science and archaeology will be demonstrated to stimulate interdisciplinary exchange and discussion. New approaches to expand current borderlines with respect to issues such as higher sensitivity, accuracy, reliability and cost-effectiveness will also be considered.

Examples of the specific topics to be covered include:

- Sampling, sample preparation and storage prior to analysis;
- Assays, screening and fingerprinting techniques;
- Micro-analytical and ultra-trace techniques;
- Coupling techniques for speciation analysis;
- Metabolite and degradation product research;
- Quality control and inter-method comparison;
- Data reduction and evaluation techniques.
