Innovative South Africa showcased in Brussels

A special event, the Innovative South Africa Conference, to be held in Brussels on Tuesday 27 June 2006, will present South Africa's innovation capacities and strategies, and also seek to deepen innovation cooperation and policy dialogue between South Africa, the European Union and its Member States.

The Innovative South Africa Conference will be presented as part of the European South Africa Science and Technology Advancement Programme (ESASTAP) - a Sixth Framework Programme Specific Support Action, targeted at improving scientific and technological cooperation between South Africa and the European Union.

Renowned international innovation experts, from South Africa and Europe, as well as from leading international organisations such as the OECD and the World Bank Institute, will participate in the Conference. Innovation policy challenges for example related to investment, measurement and indicators, commercialisation and intellectual property will be considered. Another important focus area will be innovation partnership and cooperation instruments.

An exhibition highlighting science and technology activities in South Africa will be presented concurrently with the Conference. Prof Jorma Routti from Finland, former Director-General of the European Commission's Directorate-General Research, will be the keynote speaker at the Conference Reception to be held on Monday evening 26 June 2006

The event will be held at the Sheraton Brussels Hotel and Towers.All members of the European science and technology community are warmly invited to attend the Conference. The programme will be of specific interest to those interested in innovation policy and the European Union's science and technology cooperation with emerging economies and developing countries.
