The second international conference on the detection of abandoned landmines will be held in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, from 12 to 14 October 1998, organised by the British Institution of Electrical Engineers. The aim of the conference is to review the advances in international research into new technologies which are aimed at accelerating the reliable detection of anti-personnel mines and reducing the cost of clearance.

The Ottawa Treaty to ban the manufacture and sale of anti-personnel landmines has already been signed by 126 countries, however the technical challenge of the safe removal of those mines already in the ground remains undiminished. A number of presentations will review the problems facing practitioners in mine clearance at the beginning of the conference, and these will be followed by a series of papers covering a wide range of advanced and innovative technologies.

One of the central issues to be addressed is that of sensor data fusion and the benefits of its use for detecting landmines. Performance specification and assessment will be a recurrent theme throughout the conference.
