The Université Claude Bernard in Lyon, France, will host a workshop on laser ablation systems to be held on 3 and 4 November 1998. The workshop will be co-financed within the framework of the EU's RTD programme in the field of Standards, Measurements and Testing (SMT) and the Industrial Materials and Technologies programme (BRITE/EURAM).

The objective of the workshop is to invite representatives from industry, research organisations and universities to discuss important issues related to the capabilities of available laser ablation systems and the influence of wavelength, energy density and distribution on their analytical performance. Calibration strategies for different sample types, reference materials for trace element analysis and validation methods will also be discussed. These themes will be examined with reference to materials such as polymers, steel and related material, ceramics, geological and biological samples.

The workshop will also discuss research results of SMT projects and will aim to identify future research needs in the area of standardisation, measurements and testing systems related to the quality of newly synthesised industrial materials.
