A half-day seminar entitled "Language skills mean business" will be held in London, United Kingdom, on 30 September 1998. The seminar will be organised by the Scotland/Northern Ireland Node for the Multilingual Information Society (MLIS) programme, and supported by the International Electronic Publishing Research Centre (IEPRC) and the British Department of Trade and Industry.

The aims of the seminar are to demonstrate state-of-the-art electronic tools for enhancing the foreign language skills for business export and to increase the awareness of those involved in language-related publishing of the increasing potential for their business in making their resources available electronically.

The emphasis of the conference will be on the practical demonstration of electronic tools and resources to enhance the language skills of businesses. The topics to be covered during the conference will include:

- The Multilingual Information Society programme;
- Technology: the new dimension in developing your company's language strategy;
- IBM language technology and a new voice activated tool;
- MERLIN: supporting language learning over the Internet;
- Evaluating and incorporating machine translation.
