SMEs in the Information Society

A one-day conference entitled "SMEs in the Information Society" will be held in Mainz, Germany, on 4 September 1998. The conference is an initiative of the European Commission's Information Society Project Office (ISPO) and the German regional Ministry for Commerce and Transport, in association with the Innovation Relay Centre (IRC) for Hessen/Rheinland-Pfalz. The event will be organised by the Euro Info Centre (EIC) in Trier, the Institut für Mikrotechnik (IMM) and the Rationalisierungs-Kuratorium der Deutschen Wirtschaft (RKW) in Mainz. The aim of the event is is to provide a forum for discussion on the latest developments in the Information Society and their potential impact on SMEs. The conference will begin with a discussion on recent developments in the German region of Rheinland-Palatinate in relation to electronic commerce and business, the main activities and how new information technologies will influence SMEs doing business.

The conference will also present a series of best practice case studies with a European dimension and will show how very innovative SMEs are using new information technologies to expand their markets or enter into completely new ones. In addition, best practice case studies from various European regions and regional institutions which help SMEs to adapt to new information technologies will also be discussed.
