Two workshops to stimulate cooperation on industrial catalysis entitled "New concepts in reactors and catalysts" and "Catalysis research in Member States" will discuss the latest research in industrial catalysis and will aim to stimulate appropriate responses. They will be co-financed under the EU's RTD programmes for Industrial Materials and Technologies (BRITE-EURAM), and Standards, Measurements and Testing (SMT).

The first workshop will be held in La Hulpe, Belgium, on 1 and 2 December 1998 and will aim to generate more innovative thinking about the design of catalysts and chemical reactors and the stimulation of novel concepts in catalytic reactor technology. The workshop will be organised jointly with the participants of the Industrial Materials and Technologies (IMT) Targeted Research Action on clean manufacturing, with the aim of creating project clusters in preparation for the upcoming Fifth Framework Programme.

The second workshop, which will be held in February or March 1999, will be more strategic. It will aim to give planners, and those funding catalysis-related research and development programmes and initiatives, at both national and European levels, a better awareness of industrial research needs especially in the context of global competitiveness.
