Two seminars will be organised within the framework of the European Digital Cities (EDC) project, a support action of the EU's Telematics Applications programme, which aims to accelerate the deployment of cost-effective telematics solutions for urban development. The purpose of these seminars is to raise awareness among cities, towns and regions on the benefits of urban telematics on the basis of the results of European joint pilot projects.

The first seminar will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, on 28 and 29 September 1998. The conference will be composed of a series of plenary and parallel sessions. The working groups of the projects will meet in parallel sessions covering topics such as standards, healthcare, environment, and education and training. The plenary sessions will present Portuguese telematics experiences and will focus on improving healthcare and the environment through telematics solutions.

A further seminar organised within the framework of the EDC will be held in Hamburg, Germany, on 7 and 8 December 1998. The plenary sessions of this conference will be organised around two main themes:

- Education and training covering services for schools, cooperation with universities, telematics training centres, cooperation with cultural institutions and access to learning materials;
- Economic development with an emphasis on telematics services for SMEs, outsourcing public services, electronic commerce, stimulating the use of telematics, developing one-stop-shop for SMEs, promoting local know-how, attracting local business and developing new activities.
