A one-day colloquium on the exploitation of biotechnological inventions will be held in Paris, France, on 12 October 1998. The event will be organised by the French Institut de Recherche en Propriété Intellectuelle (IRPI) in association with the Academy of European Law at Trier (ERA).

The aim of the conference is to provide a forum for discussion of the numerous legal and ethical issues related to research in biotechnology. Discussions will focus on the protection offered by patents to the results of biotechnology research, and the colloquium will feature panel discussions on questions related to patentability and issues and perspectives in this field. Specific topics to be addressed will include:

- Emergence of patentability in the field of biotechnological inventions;
- Impact of the Biotech Directive on international conventions;
- Basic requirements for patentability;
- Implementation of the Biotech Directive in French patent law;
- Exploitation of biotechnological inventions;
- The scope of protection afforded by the legislation;
- Relationship between patent and plant varieties' rights - compulsory cross-licensing.
