A European conference on alcohol and gender in Europe will be held in Berlin, Germany, from 24 to 26 March 1999. The conference will provide a forum where alcohol researchers can present their findings on alcohol and gender, as well as meet and exchange information with others working in the field. In particular, the conference will serve to present a project on women and alcohol funded within the framework of the EU's RTD programme in the field of Biomedicine and Health (BIOMED).

The main topics to be addressed during the conference include:

- Gender and alcohol policy;
- Gender and treatment seeking patterns;
- Gender and experiences of alcohol-related problems;
- Attitudes towards drinking among men and women;
- Life stage and alcohol use in men and women;
- Gender roles and alcohol use;
- Situational context of male and female drinking;
- Time-trends of gender convergence in alcohol use and abuse.
