EuroBiO 2006 Showcases the European Ambitions in the Health and Environmental Protection Fields - Biotechnologies, underpinning the new era

Wednesday 25th, Thursday 26th and Friday 27th October, the Carrefour Européen des Biotechnologies (European Biotechnology Crossroads) will celebrate its 10th anniversary in Paris on this special occasion.

25 October 2006 - 27 October 2006
France
From this year onwards, the event will be known as EuroBiO (www.eurobio2006.com) which reflects its organiser's desire to hold a major biotechnology and bio-industry event in Europe. EuroBiO will thereby provide the main European players in this field with an opportunity to develop a showcase that enhances their value in the eyes of their main North American and Asian competitors and partners.

Biotechnologies are the real revolution of the last 30 years and have become part of everyday life as they are used in more and more fields: not just human and animal health but also for new materials, new energy sources, green chemistry and environmental protection. Those pioneering countries that bet on biotechnologies are today the powerhouses of economic growth with high rates of employment creation…

Above all, biotechnologies promote an astonishing modernisation of our society, whether it’s in the pharmaceutical sector, which is still a bit 'timid' in respect of this new bio-pharmacy of the 21st century that forces them to abandon their old model of blockbusters, or in the Agricultural, Chemical of Environmental fields, which are obliged to change by the urgency of the problems they face with their corresponding deadlines.

The superb improvements that these new technologies are already providing in terms of health will lead to unprecedented new tools that strengthen environmental protection - through the use of bio-fuels and alternative energies, biochemistry, biomaterials, etc. These new tools will also provide the means to rethink the way that we use our natural resources and will disrupt, in a positive way, many of our good citizenship behaviours and the relations between developed and developing countries. A real Renaissance has started and Europe must get ready.
EuroBiO 2006, under the title of European Renaissance, e.g. a Europe of Clusters – or centres of excellence - is organised around the four axes that have made BIO successful in the US: a conference with plenary sessions, round tables and symposia with almost 200 international contributors; a business convention that facilitates meetings and networking amongst 500 companies; an exhibition bringing together international centres of excellence, companies and consultancies that are leaders in their sector; and a career fair to make it easier for companies and jobseekers to make contact with each other.

Each of the three days will deal with a specific theme via a rich programme of conferences, symposia, round tables and plenary sessions: Innovation day on Thursday, Finance day on Thursday, Global Issues day on Friday.

In addition to the expected participation of Christine Lagarde, French Minister of Foreign Trade; François Goulard, French Minister of Higher Education and Research and Xavier Bertrand, French Minister of Health and Unity, almost 200 prestigious international speakers will share their expertise, visions and hopes.

The anticipated 4,000 delegates, visitors and speakers will include: many international centres and clusters, foreign delegations (mainly from the USA, Canada and Asia), major groups in the health, food and environmental sectors, biotechnology and biopharmaceutical companies, consultants, national and international press, patient associations, industry federations, national and international research bodies. More than sixteen countries have already confirmed their participation.
A press briefing will occur every day at midday in order to keep journalists advised of the day's news. Additionally, meetings between journalists and the main speakers will be given priority in daily mid-morning and mid-afternoon breakout sessions.

Press files and releases will be available for journalists in the press room which will be equipped with computers and everything that is required to make their work easier.
'EuroBiO intends to be the catalyst for the new objectives that are appearing in the field of biotechnology and thereby become the showcase for the European Renaissance which is in preparation’ emphasises Eric Poincelet, EuroBiO General Commissioner.

'Biotechnologies have become the sector that carries the promises and responsibilities of modern industry in relation to the global population, both in terms of health with new medicaments that increase life quality and expectancy for individuals and treat diseases that were previously untreatable, and for the environment with bio-fuels, biomaterials and green chemistry that will conserve the earth whilst reducing our energy costs and dependence', adds Eric Poincelet. 'In addition to their contribution to economic growth and employment, biotechnologies are also starting to open the way to a new environmental playing field that is made possible by increased public awareness of the need to conserve our environment whilst creating a better balance between the so-called rich and the poor countries.' concludes Eric Poincelet.

'EuroBiO in not just another congress... Its high level makes it a fantastic opportunity for everyone in this sector, which is especially promising for the future, to pass on a vital message to the European decision-makers: Ethical innovation is indispensable if Europe is to become the leading knowledge based economy; the financing of this innovation must become one of the primary European priorities: today's brains and companies are quite literally our future' according to Axel Kahn, President of EuroBiO.

EuroBiO, international platform at the crossroads between biotechnology and the bio-industries, is the place where the trends and news in the bio-industry are presented and discussed with a primary focus on European problems.
