The second international conference on stimulating manufacturing excellence in SMEs (SMESME'99) will be held in Plymouth, United Kingdom, from 29 to 31 March 1999. The conference will be hosted by the University of Plymouth and aims to build on the successful work of the previous conference, bringing together industry, government and academia to focus on the development of the SME manufacturing sector.

The conference organisers are currently seeking papers from representatives of academia, industry and government on the following themes:

- Strategy issues for SMEs;
- Supply chain issues and the role of SMEs;
- Economic development and quality issues;
- Change management, and tools and methodologies for achieving change;
- Implementation of advanced manufacturing technology;
- Production management and operational issues;
- Product and process innovation;
- Case studies of successful improvement projects;
- Analytical review of SME literature;
- Experiences and issues related to interventions in SMEs from programmes such as ADAPT.
