A conference and exhibition entitled "Laboratory of future communication" will take place in Berlin, Germany, on 26 and 27 October 1998. Organised by the New Book Economy project, the event aims to explore the new opportunities for books in the era of electronic communications.

The New Book Economy project has now been running for two years, with funding from the Council of Europe and the ADAPT Community Initiative within the European Social Fund. In that time, some 2,000 personnel from all fields of the book sector in three countries have undergone training in the new opportunities offered by the electronic environment. New projects launched recently have extended the New Book Economy project to six other European countries. In order to stimulate the exchange of experience and the transfer of know-how, the project has elaborated training packages based on the new job profiles being created in the electronic environment.

As well as looking at the results of the New Book Economy project, the conference will foster the exchange of experience between similar projects. A further objective is to discuss developments and aims in European policies for the Information Society. In particular, it will look at encouraging creativity, facilitating access to networked resources, and fostering active participation of citizens and the democratic use of new technologies.
