A workshop organised by the REMPI - Re-engineering the mailer-post interface - project will take place in Brussels, Belgium, on 14 October 1998.

REMPI is an electronic commerce pilot project aimed at revolutionising customers' interface with postal services. It will develop completely new forms of access to and payment for postal services, providing the foundation for new customer-oriented services, such as proof of acceptance, day-certain delivery and tracking and tracing of ordinary mail. Postal services in Europe handle more than 80 billion items per year, with a turnover of ECU 30,000 million per year. Postal services employ 1.4 million people in Europe and serve a customer base which includes virtually all businesses and private consumers.

The workshop will look at a number of the developments from the REMPI project, and discuss the pilot projects established in the UK and Germany by REMPI. Given that post offices in Europe have already invested in very sophisticated automated systems, and that the vast majority of mail is either produced by or under the control of computers, REMPI aims to explore new ways of electronic transmission of mail. In some countries, hybrid mail has been developed, where the customer provides the letter in electronic format and the post office prints them and delivers them to the recipient in the traditional way.

REMPI aims to go beyond these limited systems with the aim of developing fully automated systems, incorporating:
- Electronic communication of mail, and standards for customer identification;
- Open, Internet-based payment systems;
- Use of encryption for privacy, data integrity and authentication;
- Reconciliation of electronic payment data with physical mail services;
- Electronic provision of proof of acceptance and tracking services to customers.
