The 1992 Conference of the European Strategic Programme for RTD in Information Technology (ESPRIT) will be held on 23-27 November, in the Palais des Congres, central Brussels, accompanied by the annual ESPRIT Exhibition.

A key element in the ESPRIT operations cycle, the Conference creates an environment for disseminating results between programme participants and between individuals and organisations not involved in the ESPRIT programme who are interested in its results. Conference sessions with a high degree of audience participation will provide the opportunity for direct contact between delegates. All areas covered by ESPRIT, the largest single programme within the Communities RTD Framework Programme, will be represented at the Conference:

- Microelectronics: Market and economic issues will be covered extensively in 1992. The main theme, "European Microelectronics in the '90s, the Challenges", concentrates on the economic challenge, future developments, the challenge of wider applications, and the new industrial environment.

- Information Processing Systems and Software: The IPSS focus on "The commercialisation of R&D", reflects a shift in emphasis from activities with a strong research element to downstream work directed towards successful exploitation. Creativity, innovation and collaboration will be considered, as well as the changing face of IT, strategic issues for the future of European industry, advanced systems architectures, high-performance application software, information servers and interfaces, system design and engineering, and awareness initiatives (ESSI and technology transfer).

- Advanced Business & Home Systems-Peripherals: Current and future work in distributed systems, multimedia, fibre and wireless communications, workstations and peripherals will be presented in sessions addressing market trends and directions, business integration for productivity and efficiency, home systems, and LCD peripherals.

- Computer Integrated Manufacturing and Engineering (CIME) will address international collaboration in advanced manufacturing, cooperative design and manufacturing in key European sectors, production data technology, competition in process industries, regional disparities in European manufacturing, intelligent sensors and activators, mechatronic manufacturing equipment, and autonomous manipulation and transport systems.

- Open Microprocessor Systems Initiative: Aiming to strengthen European capabilities in microprocessor systems technologies and applications, OMI sessions will centre on strategic directions for OMI, and the use of microprocessor systems in industry (telecommunications, automotive, computer systems, aerospace, manufacturing, consumer electronics).

- Basic Research: The ESPRIT Basic Research section will present information about and demonstrations from "Networks of Excellence" including ELSNET, Compulog-Net and Distributed Computing Architecture-Net, plus information about EUROCHIP, which is Europe's largest training action in VLSI-Design. A two-day Nanoelectronics Symposium will also take place.

- Information Exchange System: The objective of IES is to strengthen the provision of electronic communication services to ESPRIT participants in particular. Two workshops will cover aspects of computer network service usage including Computer Communications (User Forum) and Advanced Computer Networks (User Panel).
