IRE workshop: Effective Regional Innovation Systems

Good performance of individual actors is not enough for successful regional innovation. Sustainable success in innovation requires that the complete regional innovation system functions well.

30 November 2006 - 1 December 2006

The aim of this workshop, organised by the IRE Secretariat in collaboration with Lahti Science and Business Park Ltd, is to provide participants with a deeper understanding of what a regional innovation system is and how it functions. Speakers from member regions in the Innovating Regions in Europe (IRE) network will share their experience on how to further develop and strengthen their innovation systems in order to achieve long-term success. Practitioners will also share their views on what the roles and contributions of key institutions should be in an efficient regional innovation system. Key note speakers will include:

• Mr Kyösti Jääskeläinen, Executive Director, Finnish Science Park Association TEKEL, who will provide an insight into the Finnish innovation system
• Ms Maria Getsiou, DG Enterprise and Industry, European Commission, who will expose the European Commission’s regional innovation policy
• Prof Philip Cooke, Cardiff University, expert in innovation systems who will discuss regional innovation systems as a theoretical concept and from a practical point of view

Experienced IRE members will give illustrative presentations of the innovation systems in their own regions. For further information, please see the agenda and registration form available at the link below.

Please register for the event by filling in the registration form and returning it to the IRE Secretariat before 15 November. Pre-reserved rooms for special conference rates are available until 30 October. To take advantage of them, please register before this date.
