An international forum entitled "Global communications for efficient and prosperous networked communities" will be held in Paris, France, on 16 and 17 November 1998. This will be the eighth international meeting on the global Information Society and will be supported by the European Commission, DG X and DG XIII, in cooperation with the French Senate and the French Ministry of Industry.

The European Commissioner responsible for research and innovation, Mrs Edith Cresson, will open the conference. The aim is to provide participants with the opportunity to meet international leaders from Europe, North America and Japan in the context of a series of discussions and demonstrations related to the emerging global information economy. The forum will also provide participants with the opportunity to make presentations and demonstrations on related subjects.

The following topics will be addressed in detail:

- The impact of the Internet economy and converging technologies in the Information Society and the response of globalisation;
- The new dynamism and the answer of international organisations;
- New Information Society policies to develop market opportunities and networked communities;
- Convergence versus competition;
- Best practice and experiences in building and financing networked/smart communities;
- Electronic business;
- Infrastructures and telematics applications for improving competition, improving accessibility and delivery of services and being user-oriented;
- The impact of different cultures and country approaches.
