A symposium and course on the results and exploitation of EU research will be held in The Hague, The Netherlands, on 24 and 25 September 1998, organised by the Dutch organisation for networking in the fields of science, research and consultancy - Science Alliance. Participants have the option of attending either or both the symposium and the course. The main theme of the event will be the exploitation of research results from EU-funded programmes and the event will feature guest speakers from both DG XII and DG XIII of the European Commission.

Discussions will focus on the management of research in relation to applications and deliverables for universities and industry. In particular, two key questions will be addressed:

- How can the interest of potential users be identified at an early stage and be integrated into the research organisation;
- How can scientific interest be sustained within research which is more focused on application?

The effective organisation of research consortia, and the role of multinationals and SMEs will also be discussed. The programme will be divided into three parts, covering the preparation of research in view of its potential application, the design of ultimate exploitation, and follow-up programmes.
