A conference on renewable energy in Latin America will be held in Quito, Ecuador, from 14 to 16 September 1998. The conference will be supported within the framework of the demonstration component of the EU's JOULE-THERMIE Non-nuclear Energy research programme, and will be organised by the French Government Agency for the environment and energy control (ADEME), in association with partners in Spain, Greece and the UK.

The aim of the conference is to promote the development of renewable energy in Latin America, and it will comprise a series of plenary and round-table sessions. In addition, participants will be offered the opportunity to meet with other companies through a contacts session: a series of pre-arranged meetings.

The opening session of the conference will present a range of international and regional energy programmes such as the UNESCO World Solar programme and EU programmes including THERMIE, SYNERGY and ALURE. Discussions will also focus on the development of renewable energy sources in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the World Solar programme in regions such as the Mediterranean and Africa.

Other sessions will deal with the following topics:

- Relevant renewable national energy programmes;
- The technological market;
- Financing renewable energy projects in Latin America;
- The implementation, experiences and legal aspects of case studies and high priority projects;
- Novel financing mechanisms for renewable energy projects in Latin America.
