Universal personal telecommunications

ICUPC'98, an international conference on universal personal telecommunications, will be held in Florence, Italy, from 5 to 9 October 1998. The conference will cover both radio technology and networking aspects, examining specific issues such as modulation and coding, propagation, multiple access methods, dynamic resource allocation and ATM.

The conference will comprise a series of technical and panel sessions and a tutorial programme. Examples of the topics to be covered in the tutorial sessions include:

- Smart antennae for wireless communications;
- Turbo codes: performance analysis, design, iterative decoding and applications;
- Third generation wireless communication systems;
- Broadband access via a wireless local loop.

Panel discussions will address basic issues in the field of mobile and personal communications as well as the transition towards third generation systems. One of the key panel discussions on research and development in mobile and wireless communications in Europe will be led by a representative of the European Commission, DG XIII.

The technical sessions will cover a wide range of issues including:

- Modelling and measurements;
- Receiver techniques;
- Network architecture;
- Access techniques;
- Dynamic channel allocation;
- Service network interaction;
- Radio enhancements for second generation systems;
- Estimating algorithms and measurements;
- Channel encoding and modulation.
