Presenting results of the Maritime Information Society project
The conference will present the results of three years of intensive work on the MARIS project and will provide a starting point for the future perspective of the Maritime Information Society. Speakers from leading maritime industrial companies, the European Commission, the European Parliament and national and regional governments will present their views on the benefits that modern information and communication technologies will bring to the world of shipbuilding, shipping, ports and fisheries.
Examples of the benefits and solutions brought by MARIS projects include:
- In shipbuilding: electronic networks and virtual workspaces on the Internet connect all partners in the production process and data integration helps to operate ships with minimised cost;
- In shipping and port logistics: cargo and vessel-related information is permanently available on-line;
- Maritime safety is improved through technologies for better ship control and communication.
Work on the MARIS project is set to continue in the coming years, new projects will be created and new maritime sectors such as education and training will be added. A MARIS European regional network will take up its technical work this year and will aim to connect local maritime players whose inclusion in the Maritime Information Society is essential.
