The European Centre for the Strategic Management of Universities (ECSMU) will organise a seminar on European partnerships in higher education to be held in Graz, Austria, on 26 and 27 November 1998. The aim of the seminar is to promote the development of partnerships in higher education by identifying good practices and preparing the ground for future cooperation at a European level.

EU programmes offer universities a wide range of opportunities to respond to the needs of society and to develop partnerships with other players in society. The successful development of these partnerships depends on the ability within the partnership to face strategic, financial and cultural aspects. The specific aims of the seminar are therefore to:

- Make best use of the opportunities offered by the EU programmes;
- Gain expertise in the management of European partnerships and explore strategies for successful project implementation;
- Examine the roles of universities at regional, national and international level;
- Identify best practice through a number of case studies based on partnerships with enterprises and regional authorities;
- Focus on partnerships in education and research.

The seminar will focus on the following topics:

- Relations between university and the non-university higher education system;
- Case study on technology transfer;
- University-enterprise cooperation: the particular case of SMEs;
- The EU's INNOVATION programme and the experience of the Midlands Innovation Relay Centre;
- Using new technologies for life-long learning.
