FRACTAL'98, the fifth international multidisciplinary conference on fractals will be held in Valletta, Malta, from 25 to 28 October 1998. The conference will be organised by the British Council in Malta and the European Office of Naval Research.

The theme to be addressed this year will be "Complexity and fractals in the sciences". The conference will bring together practitioners in various fields of science, engineering, medicine and economics to encourage interdisciplinary discussions on the complex temporal and spatial nature of interacting systems.

In order to maximise the development of collaborative links the conference will comprise a series of presentations and a poster session and provide opportunities for informal discussions. Topics to be covered will include:

- Applications in biology, medicine, engineering, economics and sociology;
- Cellular automata;
- Fractal surfaces and volumes;
- Iterated function systems;
- Image analysis and function systems;
- Self organisation and cooperative phenomena;
- Turbulence and visualisation.

Highlights of the conference will include presentations by guest speakers on "The brain as a physical and synergetic system" and "Can statistical physics contribute to the science of economics"?
