The ninth International Convention on audiovisual media in science will take place in Paris on 2-10 October under the auspices of the Commission of the European Communities. In the context of the Convention, the Commission together with the Council of Europe and the organizers of the Convention have arranged the following events:

- 2 October: Conference "Research Organizations and Audiovisual Communication in Europe".

- 4 October: Forum "Television and Science in Europe".

- 10 October: Symposium "New Media, Scientific Information and Education in Europe"

The three events will provide an opportunity to bring the main players from the various European countries in touch with one another: Information officers from European and national research organizations; film producers; programme directors and television presenters; makers and users of multimedia products; public authorities responsible for culture, education and communication.

As well as permitting the participants to gain deeper understanding of each others' activities and policies, a further aim will be to explore specific prospects for collaborative initiatives likely to help solve common problems (attitude of researchers, limits of the audiovisual medium, storage and classification of pictures, identification of demand in potential markets) as well as those existing at European level (access to research facilities and to researchers, access to television channels from other countries, market fragmentation, problems arising from cultural and linguistic diversity, etc.).
