EGEA IV - The role of Fruit and vegetables in the fight against obesity

The 4th International Conference on the Health Benefits of fruit and vegetables within a Mediterranean style diet: EGEA IV

17 April 2007 - 19 April 2007
Belgium
The 4th international conference on the health benefits of fruit and vegetables within a Mediterranean style diet (EGEA IV), will be held in Brussels on 17-19 April 2007, with the support of the DG Sanco (Directorate General for Health and Consumer Protection) and the EU platform for Diet, physical activity and health.

EGEA IV will focus on 'The role of fruit and vegetables in the fight against obesity'.

Obesity is now considered one of the greatest public health challenges of the 21st century and a focused response is urgently needed. It is increasingly evident that a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, at least 400 grams daily, is a key player in obesity prevention and weight management. Yet consumption reports indicate that fruit and vegetable intake for all age groups remains well below the recommended minimum intake.

Given the urgency of mobilising our efforts and of giving this issue as high a political visibility as possible, EGEA IV aims to assemble over 150 international high-level scientists and decision-makers to further elucidate the mechanisms through which fruit and vegetable intake may contribute to obesity prevention and to decide on the most appropriate and effective strategies to increase fruit and vegetable intake.

An exciting and challenging scientific programme has been developed by a committee of leading experts, co-chaired by Professor Elio Riboli, Chair in Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention at Imperial College in London, UK, and Professor Martine Laville, Director of the Centre for Research on Human Nutrition in Lyon, France.

The programme comprises six main sessions: 1) Obesity; 2) Fruit and vegetables; 3) Fruit and vegetables and Obesity: potential mechanisms of prevention; 4) The special case of childhood; 5) What are the barriers to reaching the recommendations for fruit and vegetables, in the context of obesity prevention; and 6) Policies and political commitments to increase fruit and vegetable consumption within an obesity prevention strategy. This last session is organised in coordination with the EU Platform for Diet, Physical Activity and Health.
