The European Space Agency and the Space Research Organisation for the Netherlands will organise the first European symposium entitled "Space and the origin, evolution and future of life", to be held in Maastricht, The Netherlands, from 29 May to 2 June 1999.

The symposium aims to promote research in the life sciences using the space environment, and is targeted at European universities, government ministries for research and education and scientific societies. The conference organisers are currently seeking the submission of papers on the following topics for presentation during the conference:

- Evolution of life and exobiology;
- Radiation biology and dosimetry;
- Developmental, molecular and cell biology in space;
- Gravity effects on plants, animals and humans;
- Issues for interplanetary manned missions.
