25 September 1998 - 25 September 1998
Italy
The first European conference on medical radiation physics training will be held in Trieste, Italy, on 25 and 26 September 1998. The aim of the conference is to disseminate the results of the project for European Medical Radiation Learning Development (EMERALD), supported by the EU's Leonardo da Vinci programme for the implementation of a European Community vocational training policy.

The first day of the conference will be devoted to the presentation of the results of EMERALD through the three common trans-national vocational training modules. These will cover the physics of diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy. These modules are for young graduates and post-graduate students in medical physics or related disciplines, their tutors, as well as other hospital employees applying radiation to medicine.

The Structured Training Modules will use the following training materials:

- Training workbook on diagnostic radiology physics;
- Training workbook on nuclear medicine physics;
- Training workbook on radiotherapy physics;
- EMERALD Teachers' Guide.

The second day of the conference will be devoted to the further EMERALD development - a CD-ROM with medical physics images and multimedia. The feedback of experts from almost all European countries will be used for opening a wide European discussion on the problems of medical physics training. The event will also be used to lay down the basis of an EMERALD EuroNetwork.
