The second European symposium on the utilisation of the International Space Station (ISS) will be held in Noordwijk, The Netherlands, from 16 to 18 November 1998. The symposium will be organised by the European Space Agency and has the following objectives:

- To report in-depth on the selected instruments for the early utilisation phase;
- To present in detail the planned multi-user facilities and research projects under development and under definition for later phases;
- To obtain input from the user community on how these facilities will be used to support their research and development programmes.

The opening session of the symposium will provide a comprehensive survey on the status of ISS development, covering the major infrastructure contributions and research plans by the five international partners. Topics related to the capabilities of the ISS, opportunities and research plans, as well as topics related to payload accommodation, support and operations will be addressed during the plenary sessions.

In addition, a series of parallel splinter sessions will address topics under the following headings:

- Space technology and industrial application;
- Physical sciences and applications;
- Observing sciences.
