A joint EU-UNESCO workshop, organised within the EU funded project for Support for Telematics Applications Cooperation with the Commonwealth of Independent States (STACCIS), will be held in Kiev, Ukraine, from 1 to 3 December 1998. The workshop will be organised by the Ukrainian Co-ordinating Committee for STACCIS and the Earth Data Network for Education and Scientific Training (EDNES) and supported by the European Commission and UNESCO.

The theme will be "Telematics applications for research and environmental protection" and key results of projects supported within the EU's Telematics Applications programme will be presented to potential telematics users, developers and vendors in the Commonwealth of Independent States who are involved in different kinds of environmental activities.

In particular, the workshop will demonstrate the latest innovations in 3D World Wide Web programming and new telematics products in this field. Other topics of interest will cover:

- Virtual reality applications for scientific research;
- European Virtual Association activities and research projects;
- Telematics for supporting activities including foreign language learning;
- Telematics for studies, monitoring and prevention of disasters and environmental problems;
- Telematics applications for earth sciences and environmental data management;
- Satellite imagery environmental monitoring and telematics applications;
- Telematics in geosciences for civil engineering.
