A user validation seminar and the fourth BASELINE workshop will be held in Paderborn, Germany, on 15 and 16 December 1998. The BASELINE project is funded within the EU's Telematics Applications programme with the objective of supporting the needs of information engineering projects in terms of planning and executing usability engineering and user validation activities.

The project will pool validation results from information engineering projects into reference values which may then be used as baseline information for the design of new electronic information applications or as a reference with which to compare their own validation results.

The event will consist of an opening plenary session which will present case studies of user validation planning. This will be followed by a series of workshops in which the participants will learn:

- How to set up a user validation plan for a specific development project;
- How to refine the validation plan;
- How to select appropriate methods for validation;
- How to assess the costs and benefits of user validation.
