A meeting to discuss the results of projects on global health care applications, initiated by the European Commission and the governments of the G7 countries at the Brussels Summit of 1995, will be held in Regensburg, Germany, from 21 to 23 November 1998. The overall objective of the initiative was to demonstrate the potential of telematics technology in the field of telemedicine, and to promote joint approaches on issues such as the use of data cards, standards and other enabling mechanisms.

Following the 1995 meeting, a number of working groups in different sub-projects were established, including the "International concerted action on collaboration in telemedicine" and "Enabling mechanisms for global healthcare networks". The aim of these working groups was to continually improve the quality and cost efficiency of health services and healthcare, by enabling the use of telematic tools for medical purposes.

The meeting will summarise the effects of these efforts on daily healthcare management and a scientific and industrial exhibition will inform participants of possible solutions for applications in telematics. The specific topics to be addressed will include:

- Introduction to the G7 telemedicine projects;
- Global cooperation between centres of excellence;
- Global maritime telematic applications - space medicine;
- Successful vertical networking;
- Economic feasibility of telematic applications;
- Emergency telemedicine;
- Home care and home monitoring;
- Cards in healthcare.
