IP for Value Creation in Biotechnology
The upcoming module will cover the basics of patent law, the development of a strong patent portfolio and the importance of industry versus patents. SIMS intends to teach students basic skills including how to build a pipeline for creative value, how to sell and buy IP and how to choose the right IP strategy as well as exposing participating scientists and companies to new research and business opportunities, giving them a better understanding of the technology markets and the technological value chains. The faculty of experts will include Mrs. Margaret Beer, Director and Scientific Liaison at Merck, Mrs. Nancy Levi, the President of Bio-Health Management in Boston, Mr. Jorn Roland Muller, partner at Vossius and Partner and Mrs. Denise Hirsch, Director of IP at INSERM in Paris. The Programme Director will be Mr. José Carlos Gutiérrez-Ramos, Vice-President of R&D at San Francisco-based Avidia, and former Vice President for Inflammation at Millennium Pharmaceuticals.
The first module of the course, “Basic Business Essentials of Biotechnology”, took place in Barcelona from 29 June – 1 July 2006, bringing together 10 industry experts and 24 participants, over two thirds of whom stated that they would actively recommend the course. One of the attendees, Fouzia Laghrissi of the Roche Licensing department claimed that “It was a great pleasure to contribute to the course. This has been an enjoyable and good learning experience.”
