The twentieth meeting of the international association of technological university libraries (IATUL) will be held in Chania, Greece, from 16 to 22 May 1999. The aim of the meeting is to discuss the future of libraries in human communication and the challenges faced by librarians into the next century. The conference will also consider innovation and new roles in relation to the needs of administrators, clients, librarians and information specialists.

The future of libraries is often considered in terms of the application of new technologies, however the focus of this conference will be on the impact of these technologies in relation to human needs. The "service" role of libraries will also be considered in relation to the changes that will occur in management strategies and methods and organisation.

The conference organisers are currently seeking the submissions of papers for presentation during the conference on the following themes:

- The changing role of the library: missions and ethics;
- The changing role of the library: new organisations;
- Focus on users;
- The librarian of the 21st century;
- Total quality management: from industry to higher education and libraries.
