The European Commission's Marine Science and Technology programme will sponsor a workshop reviewing current European research on harmful algal blooms, to be held in Kalmar, Sweden, from 5 to 7 November 1998. The workshop is being organised by the University of Kalmar, in collaboration with an international organising committee. It will aim to establish a more generic approach to the problem, in order to understand better the mechanisms underlying the occurrence and dynamics of algal blooms.

The workshop is timely, in view of the upcoming Fifth RTD Framework Programme, and in particular the research theme "Human impacts on the marine environment". It is felt that it is particularly important to coordinate research at an international level since the water bodies containing harmful algal blooms are shared by several European countries.

In order to address these issues, the workshop has the following objectives:

- Identification of the scope of the problem;
- Reviewing the impact of anthropogenic activities on the functioning of marine ecosystems;
- Identification of key research issues needed at the European level.

The first day of the workshop will present regional European reports on harmful algal blooms and their environmental and economic effects, as well as international research programmes ongoing in the area. The second day will serve to identify key research issues at a European level and to discuss specific issues within several working groups. The working groups will report their findings on the final day and a draft report for research on harmful algal blooms will be drawn up.
