The third international conference on technology policy and innovation will be held in Austin, USA, from 9 to 11 September 1999. The conference organisers are currently seeking the submission of papers for presentation during the conference, which will focus on the economic, technological and social transformations associated with the emerging knowledge society.

The topics to be covered during the conference will fall under the following headings:

- Emerging issues in science and technology - policy analysis;
- Policy, tools and methods for the learning society;
- Engineering, technology and public policy;
- Market integration, innovation and development.

The proceedings of the first conference in this series, held in Macau, from 2 to 4 July 1997, have recently been published in a book entitled "Science, technology and innovation policy: opportunities for the 21st century". The conference presented new developments in the understanding of the impact of science and technology systems on economic and social development.

The publication contains selected papers from the conference under the following headings:

- Knowledge for development;
- The university in the knowledge-based society;
- National and global perspectives on technology and innovation policies;
- Challenges for newly industrialised regions;
- Opportunities for China;
- Sustainability, environment and business-policy and strategies;
- Broadening perspectives.
