The final results of a research project addressing the issue of a secure electronic marketplace for Europe (SEMPER) will be presented during a special event for this purpose in Rüschlikon, Switzerland, on 4 November 1998. The SEMPER project was funded under the EU's research programme in the field of Advanced Communications Technologies and Services (ACTS), and aimed to provide the first complete security architecture for doing electronic business over the Internet.

The SEMPER service offers a framework that integrates all the services required for secure electronic commerce, such as secure offering, ordering, payment and information delivery. Other services offered include user authentication, confidentiality and fair exchange.

The specific topics to be presented during the event are:

- European research in electronic commerce;
- Security requirements by commercial parties;
- Architecture of SEMPER;
- Protocols and architecture for fair exchanges of business items;
- SEMPER generic payment service framework;
- Security policies and trust management;
- Liability cover service;
- Legal issues and the SEMPER electronic commerce agreement;
- Concept and demonstration of the fair Internet trader;
- Trials and their evaluation;
- SEMPER and future directions in secure electronic commerce.
