Oceanography of the eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea

An international conference addressing oceanographic research on the eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea will be held in Athens, Greece, from 23 to 26 February 1999. It will be organised by the Greek National Centre for Marine Research and co-sponsored by the EU within the framework of the Marine Science and Technology research programme (MAST) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO.
The oceanography of the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea has been the subject of several research projects supported by various agencies. The conference will provide an opportunity for these research groups to meet and address their experiences and scientific achievements, in order to enhance cooperation and avoid duplication of research efforts.
In addition, the conference will provide the scientific community with the opportunity to stress the similarities and differences of the two basins and their interactions. It will also enable them to identify areas for further research and to enhance the interface between research and policy for the most effective usage of scientific results. The conference organisers are currently seeking the submission of papers for presentation during the conference.
