A major scientific conference reviewing climate change research undertaken within the Fourth RTD Framework Programme will be held in Vienna, Austria, from 19 to 23 October 1998. The conference will be hosted by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Transport in Vienna and will feature presentations from many of those involved in the EU's Environment and Climate research programme (1994-1998), including the Director-General of the European Commission's DG XII, Mr Jorma Routti.

Some 120 climate change projects will be presented during the conference which will mark the end of many of the climate research projects of the Fourth RTD Framework Programme. Thus the conference will provide a good opportunity to review progress made in light of the new climate research to be undertaken within the next Programme. In addition, the results of the conference will deliver important input into the Post-Kyoto process and the discussions during the fourth conference of the parties to the UN Convention on Climate Change, to be held in Buenos Aires in November 1998.

Projects to be reviewed during the conference will fall under the following headings:

- Climate variability and modelling;
- Climate change impacts on forests and ecosystems;
- Hydrological regimes and European water resources;
- Green house gases, carbon cycle and air-sea exchange;
- Hydrological regimes and European water resources;
- Past climates;
- Clouds, aerosols and polar processes;
- Climate change impacts on agriculture;
- Desertification.
