South Africa - EU special event at BioVision 2007
It is organised against the backdrop of the changing industrial landscape, steadily being transformed by the penetration of biotechnology into a large number of production sectors including food and nutrition, feed, chemical, paper and pulp, textiles, and energy.
Both South Africa and the EU have witnessed the development of competitive, eco-efficient and innovative industrial sectors (the "bio-economy",) which is indeed emerging globally. The European Union and South Africa also enjoy a strategic science and technology partnership.
The special event at BioVision will therefore seek to determine the scope for the parties' learning from each other to how best stimulate the development of a "Knowledge based Bio-Economy", which will support global sustainable development.
A specific focus of the event will be to explore the scope for closer bio-economy research and innovation partnerships between the EU and South Africa, including under the Seventh Framework Programme.
The event will feature high-level speakers from the South African Department of Science and Technology, the South African biotechnology research community, the European Commission, EuropaBio and representatives from industry.
The event will be held in the Lyon Convention Centre, Room Rhone 3B, starting at 16:30 to conclude at 19:00.
All interested parties are welcome to attend.
