The European Commission, DG XII, will organise a conference on renewable energy technologies and strategies in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEECs) to be held in Sophia Antipolis, France, from 19 to 21 October 1998. The aim of the event is to provide a discussion forum for those involved in research on renewable energy from both the EU and CEECs, in order to make the most of the experience gained.

The specific objectives of the event are to update participants on the latest technical developments in renewable energy, and to discuss issues, perspectives and policies allowing wider implementation of their use in the CEECs. The conference will serve to asses the main results of research projects, identify avenues for further research, and discuss strategies for the wider implementation of cost-effective energy services based on renewable energy technologies in the CEECs.

A plenary session on issues and perspectives of national renewable energy programmes in the CEECs will open the conference. This will be followed by a series of parallel sessions on solar buildings, photovoltaics, small hydro, biomass and wind energy. The conference will close with a presentation on future options, needs, recommendations and strategic orientations in the CEECs.
